[Short Film Review] Umbrella

Hello readers. I'm back again with new content!

    It is the first post that I'm writing in English. Today I want to review a short film by Statostorm entitled "Umbrella". This movie was successful to win the 2021 Oscar Award and multi-award-winning as Qualified Animated Short Film. This five-minute film deserves to got appreciation. All the aspects are perfect, start from the animation, plot, and moral value. I bet you will cry when watching this film.

    The second time I watched this film, my tears were still out, my heart was touched, and the word perfect mumbling by my mouth. Actually, this story was simple but the creators conveying the characters is very smooth and strong, especially the orphan boy. It is hard to make a movie with a short duration with the aim conveyed to the viewer. Moreover, this film doesn't have a dialogue. These things made this film more special.

    Ok, I will start to review this "Umbrella" short film. You must know that I'm not an expert in film. I just ordinary person who like watch movie and wants to share with you. So this review will be simple. I hope you will enjoy it!

1. Storyline

(He draw something he missed) 

   I had mentioned before that the story is quite simple. In the first scene, there was a boy standing in front of the window. The boy looking outside, whereas the rainy days. He drew two people under an umbrella in the window. Throughout the movie, the boys look sad until the climax when he's met a girl who visiting an orphanage with her mom. The boy was going to steal the yellow umbrella, but he's caught by the girl. Behind that, the boy has a reason why he is stealing the umbrella. I think I didn't find a hole in the story. The ending of the movie is very heart-warming. I don't mind giving you a spoiler but if you are curious I can describe everlasting as a word.

2. Storyboard

    One of the things that made this film satisfying is the cinematography. The smooth transition every scene to scene is made aesthetically. Other things, the color tone is eye-catching. The drawing style of the animation is great. A film cannot be complete without back sounds, in this film the back sounds blend well with the scene. It tries to convey the character's feelings to those of us who are watching.

3. Setting

 

(When everything starts)

    An orphanage is the main setting place of this movie. Almost every scene happens in there, but some flashbacks and movements occurring in another place, like on the street, in the shop, and in the car. The emotion flows from sad to sincere and happy. From the entire scene of the film, this film has back and forth flowed to bring the storyline. 

4. Character

(Yellow scarf from refugee)

    This story has four main characters, an orphan boy, a girl, a girl's mom, and a refugee. Because it's a short film, we can't look clearly at character development. The storyline flows briefly. However, the creator made the feeling of the characters clear with their expression, like sad, angry, curious, and many others. I like the character of orphan boys because I think is realistic. He's can forget about a refugee even though he had a better life now, but the boys want to left his sadness with someone who loves him now.

5. Theme

(Everlasting with his destiny)

    Loneliness and social emotion being the main theme of this movie. How the orphan boys felt when he misses the refugee, his heart being emotional when looking at the yellow umbrella that remains him. The mom teaches her children to share simple things with the orphanage, and the refugee who sacrifices himself to an orphan boy. Things that appear in my mind when finished watching this film are "Happiness doesn't always come from the same person, but we can also regret the kindness of other people to us. No matter how small the help and the attention it will so precious."
